Property sales had all but stopped until firesale auctions came to the country in April 2011. After a series of these sales, market clearing prices were set. Sale prices were 50% to 90% less than peak prices. Today, we’re two years on… and you can now buy at prices comparable to these auctions through regular channels.
I’ve just returned from my first scouting trip to Panama’s mountain country of Boquete in five years. Back in 2007 to 2008, the market became frothy and prices too high. I stopped visiting until now. This time, my trip threw up some interesting opportunities. The most significant development I noticed in Boquete is how real estate prices are at their lowest in almost a decade. Before I tell you about the deal, let me remind you about the Path of Progress I’ve seen in this region. Not too long ago, Playa del Carmen, the jewel in the Riviera Maya, was a small village with sand streets. In the last 10 years, it rapidly became a hip beach town.
