They call it the “Pearl of the Pacific.”
For decades the city of Mazatlán was one of Mexico’s most inviting beach destinations.
In the 1950s and ‘60s, it attracted Hollywood celebrities such as John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Rock Hudson, and Robert Mitchum for sport-fishing and more. But following a period of rapid growth in the ‘70s and ‘80s, it lost some of its low-key allure.
Mazatlán is popular with domestic tourists and has seen a rise in visitors since the completion of the Durango-Mazatlán Highway in 2013—a 140-mile, $2.16 billion road linking the Pacific with the Central-North of the country.
My first visit to Mazatlán was more than 15 years ago. Back then I was leery of investing.
As I explain in my full scouting report, I had good reason.
But after hearing a certain amount of buzz about Mazatlán recently, I decided to go back earlier this year.
What I found was a charming historic center with hip restaurants and live music…vast golden-sand beaches…and a 13-mile long malecon that was the perfect spot for an evening stroll…and even some bargain beachfront real estate—I’m talking sleek luxury condos with ocean views for well under $250,000.
As a pure lifestyle play…I’m all about Mazatlán.
But is there real investment potential?
