Past Reflections and Hidden Gems

Saturday, November 27, 2021

Ronan McMahonDear Your Overseas Dream Home Reader,

I hope you’ve had a happy Thanksgiving this week and were able to survive the yearly Black Friday madness.

I’ve been enjoying the November sun here in my home in Cabo, Mexico. I’ve been playing golf, walking the beach, and checking in with my team of international real estate scouts…as well as musing about the week’s holidays and what they mean.

This past week, I shared my thoughts as well as my scouts’ reports with you…

Six-Figure Gains, Rental Checks, and Perfect Weather

Since this past week has been a time for giving thanks, I’ve been reflecting on how thankful I am for the internationalized life I get to lead, and reflecting on how it all started.

It was about this time 18 years ago that I knocked on the door of a nondescript building in Waterford, Ireland and walked into the office of International Living. I told them I was a real estate investor in search of opportunity, that the market in Ireland felt tapped out and I wanted to look internationally.

They said that they had hundreds of thousands of readers looking for the same thing, and they wanted me to go scouting on their behalf.

That conversation happened in December 2003, and I started to work with them on January 4th, 2004. Within a week, I was on a flight to Nicaragua and Panama to scout for real estate opportunities, and I’ve been on the road since.

This Mexican Beach Town Is a Hidden Gem

For some time, I’ve been captivated by images I’ve seen on Instagram of empty golden-sand beaches on little cliff-lined bays…the views you get from homes and condos perched on steep hillsides overlooking the glittering Pacific…in a low-key Mexican beach community called Huatulco.

My scout, Jason Holland, put boots on the ground in Huatulco and what he found piqued my interest.

Huatulco is located on the Pacific coast in the Mexican state of Oaxaca.

Huatulco is a master-planned community created by the Mexican tourism agency FONATUR. But unlike similar projects like Cancun, Huatulco has avoided the over-development and massive high-rise blocks.

Instead it is low-rise, ecological, and retains a welcoming small town feel that is attractive tourists and snowbirds from Canada.

Jason says: “This stretch of Pacific coast is starkly beautiful, with steep hills rising sharply from the water, giving many residents perched in those villas and condos on the slopes panoramic views.”

Take a Video Tour of Huatulco

Jason’s scouting of this lesser-known Mexican tourist gem continued as he dug deep on real estate in the area and sent in some killer video that made me sit up and take notice.

He shared some properties he found with truly spectacular views over the water…for under $500,000.

This attractive property features lagoon pools and stellar views and is a quick walk to a great gourmet seafood restaurant and a beautiful golden-sand beach. Click above to see Jason’s video.

Jason found everything from studios available for $143,000 and two bedrooms for $208,000 to a luxury villa set on a hillside overlooking the Pacific that comes in at around $1 million.

He had his camera in his pocket and recorded everything.

Wishing you good real estate investing,

Ronan
