We Have Boots on the Ground

Saturday, November 20, 2021

Ronan McMahonDear Your Overseas Dream Home Reader,

I’m a firm believer of putting boots on the ground to find the best real estate deals around the world. I believe there is no substitute for it. Which is why I spend six months of the year on the road…checking out opportunities, exploring new (and old) locations, and getting the full picture.

My team also spend a chunk of the year traveling the globe. If you’ve been a regular reader of this e-letter you’ll have read reports from Portugal, Italy, Mexico, and Costa Rica in the last few months.

This past week, I shared a number of from-the-road reports with you…

The Small City That’s Waking Back Up

Team member Jason Holland sent an update from the charming colonial city of San Miguel de Allende, where he currently lives. He has lived abroad for nearly 10 years and has spent the last four in San Miguel. And he and his family finally found a place that caused them to reconsider their previous nomadic ways—they had lived in eight locations in two countries before this move.

San Miguel’s churches are masterpieces of Baroque architecture. The colonial-era mansions pressing in upon its cobbled lanes and shady plazas hide flower-filled courtyards with tinkling fountains.

Bougainvillea cascades down pastel-colored walls in the town’s historic heart, which is compact, walkable, and strictly protected by a raft of regulations.

Jason isn’t the only one drawn by San Miguel’s charms. It’s been a popular tourist destination for decades. And, after a pandemic dip, the industry is showing renewed signs of life…Jason explains more here.

Take a Walk Along Dubrovnik’s Walls of History

Over in Europe, my roving real estate scout Paul O’Sullivan is continuing his scouting trip around Croatia. This week he was in the historic city of Dubrovnik.

Founded by 7th-century refugees, Dubrovnik has been part of no less than nine different empires and states throughout the course of its history (often without much say in the matter). It’s steeped in history.

Paul says: “It’s one of the most breathtaking places I’ve ever seen, and absolutely unmissable.”

Paul was there to spy out real estate bargains as part of a greater mission to scout the Dalmatian Coast and Croatia in general. He shares his Dubrovnik adventure—and initial real estate findings—here.

The Boutique Town Along a Path of Progress

As you probably know, I spend my winters in Cabo, on Mexico’s Pacific Coast. When I’m here, I often like to take a day trip up to the small town of Todos Santos.

Amid the majesty of the Baja desert—less than an hour from Cabo San Lucas—Todos Santos is truly stunning. It’s in a fertile pocket of the Baja, a veritable Garden of Eden.

It’s a very different kind of place to Cabo…you won’t find big luxury resorts here, instead it’s boutique.

Todos Santos is an oasis attracting well-heeled visitors with its farm-to-table dining, galleries and stunning beaches close by.

And the town’s location between the beaches and the soaring Sierra de la Laguna mountains is perfect for outdoor activities and the climate is ideal year round.

Thanks to a classic Path of Progress it’s a place I’m looking closely for opportunity…you can read more about this charming town here.

(By the way, whatever I find here, I’ll be sharing with members of my Real Estate Trend Alert group. To ensure you hear about any opportunities here, and in other locations on my beat, you can sign up to become a member here.)

This is just what me and my team have been up for over the last couple of weeks…there’s plenty more to come…

Scouting a Potential Vacation Rentals Opportunity

I am sending one of my team, Jason Holland, on a scouting trip to the town of Huatulco, on Mexico’s Pacific coast.

This resort area in the far southern Pacific coast features an amazing nine bays and 36 white- and golden-sand beaches. Although it was developed specifically for tourism by the Mexican government decades ago and does features plenty of all-inclusive resorts, it remains low-key and laidback. The area has received international recognition for its eco-friendly and sustainable development.

Some beaches are built up, near the main towns, some are quite remote and reachable only by boat thanks to the difficulty of building roads through the Sierra Madre del Sure mountains—plus there are vast protected areas.

I’ve been hearing murmurs about Huatulco’s vacation rentals market, and I’m excited to see what Jason turns up.

Wishing you good real estate investing,

Ronan
