Live by the Beach in the Dominican Republic

Sunday, March 7, 2021

Ronan McMahon Dear Your Overseas Dream Home Reader,

As I told you yesterday, I’m changing the name of this e-letter to Your Overseas Dream Home (starting from tomorrow).

One of the reasons for the name change is to reflect the bargain properties I’ve been bringing you from around the world.

Properties like the ones I want to show you here today from the Dominican Republic…

These aren’t double-your-money deals like the real estate investments I negotiate for my Real Estate Trend Alert group. However, I still think they’re worth your attention. These are overlooked bargain gems in a beautiful location at knock-down prices. And I’ll be bringing you a lot more of these in the weeks and months to come.

For Americans and Canadians, the Dominican Republic is a favorite for all-inclusive resort vacations.

They come in droves thanks to low daily rates—all you can eat and drink included—and cheap and easy flights to one of the island nation’s seven international airports.

They come for year-round warm weather, azure Caribbean waters, white-sand beaches, and an island vibe with a Latin flair.

Those same attributes also attract a sizeable contingent of expats and second-home owners from North America and Europe. They came on a vacation, fell in love with the country, and decided to stay or buy their own getaway.

Dominican Republic offers stunning white-sand beaches…inexpensive real estate…and it’s close to the U.S.

And, as my team has discovered with the listings below, there are plenty of places ideal for comfortable long- or short-term living, with a range of housing, from condos to villas, and price points…including some very affordable options in some of the most popular beach communities in the Dominican Republic.

Las Terrenas, Dominican Republic
Listing Price: $ 100,000

Las Terrenas is a small town on the northern coast with a distinctive European feel. French hippies first settled here in the 1970s, when there wasn’t even electricity in the then-tiny fishing village (you can still buy fresh catch on the beach). And they were followed closely by the Italians. They helped turn this town into a chic—but still low-key—destination. And many still cross the Atlantic for their annual month-long vacation.

You’ll see baguettes in the bakeries and old men playing boules by the beach…and perhaps the best espresso in the Caribbean. Plus, the local supermarkets have a huge selection of imported wine, cheese, and charcuterie.

Within a quick walk to Playa Bonita, a quiet beach about five minutes from the town center, is a one-bedroom, one-bathroom condo. The property has tropical landscaping, large pool, and hot tub. Plus, you can enjoy a variety of restaurants just outside the gate.

Cabarete, Dominican Republic
Listing Price: $69,000

Thanks to steady easterly trade winds, Cabarete, a small beach town on the northern coast, has become one of the premier kiteboarding and windsurfing spots in the world. You’ll usually find the expansive bay filled with brightly colored sails; it’s quite a sight.

But there is plenty of off-the-water fun as well, including restaurants of every cuisine, markets, boutiques, and cute little handicraft shops. Many bars and eateries have tables on the sand, offering live music, salsa dancing, and drink specials well into the night.

Right in the heart of the action is this studio apartment, walking distance to everything, set in a community with swimming pool, swim up bar, and restaurant. It comes furnished.

Rio San Juan, Dominican Republic
Listing Price: $149,000

Also on the north coast, set in between Cabarete and Las Terrenas, is Rio San Juan, which for years was known primarily for fishing, ranching, and farming. Recently, increasing numbers of visitors have discovered it and there are some resorts, yet it’s off the main tourist trail. This is small-town life—Dominican style. There are surfing beaches and swimming beaches, as well as diving just offshore, birdwatching in nature reserves, and golf.

Located in the hills above town, offering expansive views of the surrounding countryside, is this three-bedroom, two-bathroom villa set on a quarter acre. It’s in a gated community. There’s a golf course close by, and there are multiple beaches within a quick drive. It comes fully furnished.

Wishing you good real estate investing,

Ronan
