On my international real estate beat I look for two things: Capital appreciation and strong rental income. Some locations will offer appreciation potential, others the income. Only in a rare place at a unique moment does an opportunity tick both boxes.

Auctions can be a great way to pick up a piece of real estate priced well below market value. And buying the right property at auctions can lead to a killer deal. You need to find the right property at the right auction. It takes work and thought, but do it right and you can pick up a bargain piece of real estate for far less than market value.

I expected it to be ”one and done.” But the deeper I dig into the real estate story here, the more opportunity I find—the kinds of opportunities no one else is talking about.
I’m planning a research trip to Portugal’s Algarve next month. This will be my sixth trip since crisis came to Portugal.
